Zipadee-Zip Review and Giveaway

What is the Zipadee-Zip?

Well it is a "star-shaped pointed sleeve wearable blanket.

Why is it different from other wearable sleeveless blankets?

"The slight resistance in the wing-span allows a baby to move around freely while still providing the enclosed, cozy sensation babies enjoy so much in the swaddle and the womb.  The ‘Moro’ or startle reflex is what prevents a baby from sleeping soundly and jolts a baby awake suddenly. The reason babies are startled is because they wake up and can’t feel their edges like they were able to in the womb. The Zipadee-Zip provides those ‘edges’ or that womb like environment while still providing them the freedom to roll around and use their arms and hands safely." This is a wonderful transition off the swaddle blanket to a regular blanket.

After seeing this product on Shark Tank, I was interested to try it and see what all the fuss was about. After a couple of nights of teaching my daughter to pick up her pacifier with the blanket over her hand, it was great. My 16 month old daughter had been waking up in the night because she was cold, and had kicked off her blankets. I was having to dress her in several layers of pyjamas to keep her warm. I thought I was really smart putting a sleep sac on her until I woke up in the morning and she was sleeping beside it. This is a great solution to keeping her warm and allowing her to move about her crib.

Uses

  1. Swaddle Transition Blanket- teaches self soothing skills
  2. Car Seat Blanket
  3. Stroller Blanket
  4. Dr. Visits (avoid changing and keeps baby warm)
  5. After Bath Blanket
  6. Breastfeeding
  7. Baby Carrier Blanket
  8. Great for travel to avoid germs
Pros
  • Absolutely NO Chemicals used in the making
  • Versatile-many uses
  • Easy washing instructions
  • Many cute patterns and colours
  • Baby can safely stand, roll and crawl while staying warm in their blanket
Cons
  • My daughter had difficulty retrieving pacifier during the night, it took several nights to teacher her how to find it during the middle of the night.
  • A thicker fleece option may be nice in the future to use for camping or colder days in the car seat

You can win a Zipadee Zip Slumber Sack of your very own. Enter here

I spoke with Will and asked him some questions about his musical career. Here is what he had to say;

1. When and why did you start playing?
I started playing music when I was 4 years old. The violin was my first instrument. When I hit high school I started playing guitar and haven’t looked back since. I started writing songs for kids when I was studying to become a teacher at UBC. I wrote some songs and tested them out with students at my practicum school as well as my fellow teacher candidates and they were hits. I knew I was on to something.

2. Which instruments do you play?
My main instrument is the guitar. I play acoustic, electric, ukulele and some bass. I grew up playing the violin and those early days learning an instrument have served me really well.

3. What was the first song you learned?
On violin as a little kid it was “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” Pretty standard I guess. On guitar I can’t honestly remember, but probably something by Led Zeppelin.

4. Which musicians do you admire? Why?
I am a fan of many styles of music, but when it comes to musicians I admire I’d have to say it all those independent artists across Canada right now working so hard to make a living in the music business. There are so many fantastic musicians in Canada right now who make great music in every genre you can imagine. To make it as a musician these days you have to be very creative, determined and entrepreneurial and those are all traits I admire.

5. Who was your first teacher?
I had a number of violin teachers over the years, but I’ll tell you about my guitar teacher who really got me very excited about music. His name is Rob Montgomery, a local musician from here in Vancouver, who I grew up across the street from. He was a real mentor to me in my teen years and took me under his wing. I learned a lot from him, not just about music, but also about self-confidence and having a positive outlook. He is an amazing man who continues to inspire his fans and students both young and old here in Vancouver.

6. What are your fondest musical memories?
One specific memory I have from my childhood was meeting a fiddle player from Newfoundland at Expo 86 in Vancouver when I was 8 years old. His name was Rufus Guinchard and I think it was one of the first times I saw someone play fiddle music. My parents invited him to dinner at our house and I even got to show him my violin and we played together a bit as well. It was a special and unique opportunity and his style (which included tucking his violin into his shirt while he played) made me realize that there are many ways to make music. It taught me that music is an experience you share, it’s not just writing on a page.

7. Do you get nervous before a performance?
No. I’ve done over 1000 performances for young audiences. I live for live performances. My favourite place to be is behind a microphone with my guitar singing for families.

8. What advice would you give to beginners who would like to start playing instruments and/or singing?
First of all, do it! There are countless reasons to learn to play music, perhaps the most important one is that it is fun! My second piece of advice is to try to find a teacher that inspires you in some way. A good teacher will mean the difference between sticking with it or losing interest.

9. What will the kids want to know about you?
My favourite colours are Blue and Orange. My favourite instrument, other than the ones I play, is the accordion.
I have two little girls named Ella (4) and June (4 months). In the end of the “Full of Beans” video Ella is the one who toots!

Thanksgiving at the Agriculture Museum

THANKSGIVING WEEKEND

Thanksgiving Weekend
At this time of year, many Canadian farms are harvesting the food crops that will sustain us throughout the year. To celebrate the harvest, join us at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum where you will be able to learn how simple and easy it is to prepare cranberry sauce and make good use of Thanksgiving leftovers. You may also discover how certain farms are harvesting more than just food by producing energy from sources such as the sun, the wind, or crops. Children will be able to get creative with a craft and dig for buried root cellar treasure. Other activities include the perennial favourite apple cider making as well as livestock-related demonstrations. Come to the Museum this Thanksgiving weekend to celebrate the harvest!

Activities:

Cereal Barn

Apple Cider Making and Tasting (10:30, 11:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30)
What happens to all the apples that are bumped and bruised and not perfect to eat out-of-hand? They are pressed and turned into cider! At this demonstration, visitors can make good use of their energy to help operate the press and will of course be able to taste the fruits of their labour at the end.
Canadian Crops (ongoing activity)
Most everyone is familiar with wheat, oats, corn, and potatoes as Canadian crops. Not everyone might be aware though that crops such as mustard, lentils, and chickpeas are also grown commercially in Canada. Come learn more about these foods, try your hand at grain grinding and oat rolling, test your crop knowledge with a quiz, and taste some snacks made from these Canadian crops.

Learning Centre

Children’s Craft (ongoing activity)
Children will enjoy creating a wearable craft made from one of Canada’s major crops, wheat.
Root Cellar Activity for Children (outside, weather permitting)
These sandboxes aren’t just for making castles in! Did you know that some foods can be safely stored over winter by packing them in sand? Along with their parents, children can get their hands dirty and discover which ones can (and which ones can’t) and maybe even unearth some unexpected treasures while they’re at it!

Dairy Barn – Barnyard

Hoof Trimming Saturday only (weather permitting, schedule to be confirmed)
Cows left outside to wander wear down their hooves much more than cows that spend more of their time on farms like ours. This being the case, it is important to keep the cows hooves of a reasonable length for their comfort and health. Come see how we keep the dairy cows healthy as they get their bi-annual pedicures done. A guide will be on hand to explain the process and answer questions.

Energy Park

Bioenergy Garden Tour (10:45, 12:15, 2:15 and 3:45)
Corn, soy, flax, and canola can be readily found growing in the fields surrounding the Museum but why would we be growing switch grass, and miscanthus? More and more, all these common and not-so-common crops are being grown and harvested to be transformed into biofuels. During this guided tour, visitors will be able to learn about these versatile plants and the various products they provide us.

Demonstration Kitchen (Exhibitions Area)

Cranberry Sauce Making (ongoing, except for during the kitchen demonstration times listed below)
Simply opening a can is definitely an easy option, but making cranberry sauce is surprisingly simple. A Museum guide will be preparing this ubiquitous Thanksgiving condiment on an ongoing basis and giving tips on how to preserve it safely.
Thanksgiving dinner “leftovers” (10:15, 11:45, 2:00, and 3:30)
If you’re like many Thanksgiving dinner hosts, perhaps you find yourself with leftovers but no good ideas of what to do with them. Why not join us in the kitchen to help make quick and easy leftover bites and put an end to the turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce dilemma. Information on cranberry and turkey production will also be presented.

Other Demonstrations:

9:30Horse Harnessing *Weather Permitting
10:00Rabbit Care
10:30Meet the Poultry
1:30Animal Habitats
2:30Meet Molly the Donkey
4:00Afternoon Milking

Also:

Tally-Ho Wagon Rides ($) weather permitting (10:00 – 2:00)
Enjoy a tour through the fields of the Central Experimental Farm on the Tally-Ho wagon pulled by the dynamic duo, Ted and Merrill, the Museum’s Clydesdale horses.
Food Service ($)
Bytown Catering will be on site to offer food services.

Bayshore had a makeover...and became less family friendly!

On this fairly rainy and chilly weekend we decided to go and see the new Bayshore, and boy were we disappointed. Yes, it is newly designed with new sitting areas and shiny floors, however, it seems as though the family has been forgotten for fashion and flare!

2 nursing areas and high chairs in the food court, is that it? Well the bathrooms were disgusting and I wouldn't touch the change tables, let alone, change my child on it, and the high chairs weren't much cleaner. Speaking of high chairs, the new food court had no healthier choice options unless you consider Tim Hortons healthy! So be sure to bring a snack along for the kids. There were a few locations left to open soon, so fingers crossed.

Amongst all the new class and style of the mall there are no kiddie or family zones as I have seen in many other malls or Ikea (for example). Therefore, stop by for the free baby and mommy yoga, but don't expect to make a day of it with the kids. Also, be prepared to stand in line for the elevator if you bring a stroller, with only 2 elevators Bayshore has become a mall for the serious shoppers, and teenagers. Such a shame
