*Please note that the Museum will be open on Monday, December 29 and Tuesday, December 30 during Winter Frolic - Holiday Programming.
At this time of year, many Canadians gather by the fireplace, bake homemade goodies, decorate the home, and get bundled up to play in the snow. But how did Pioneers fare through a long, cold, and dark winter? Come to the Museum to discover A Pioneer Winter with agricultural holiday activities old and new. Don’t forget to visit the animals in the barns and check out the other demonstrations being offered!

Pioneer Winter Homestead (Market Square, ongoing)
Learn about the pioneer winter lifestyle by walking in their shoes. Get ready to roll up your sleeves to do chores such as milking, pumping water, and wool carding. Then sit by the fire and make an old-fashioned craft to take home, all while your pioneer guide explains the array of pioneer tools, props and artifacts on display in the very humble and cozy Pioneer Winter Homestead. To top off the pioneer experience, children can also try on a pioneer costume!

What kind of treats did pioneer children enjoy for the holidays? With white sugar expensive and sometimes hard to come by, molasses was a great alternative and there is nothing more fun (or tasty) than pulling your own molasses taffy! Cookies were always a welcome sweet treat too - gingerbread jumbles are a combination of two very old favourites. Help bake some and learn about the origins of these century-old recipes. To round out the pioneer experience, participate in a butter making demonstration, the old-fashioned way.
