Holidays at the Museum of Nature

Holiday activities at the Canadian Museum of Nature

Experience the Arctic this holiday season through an assortment of fun activities at the Canadian Museum of Nature.
The Museum’s Salon will be a hub of activity every afternoon (12:30 pm – 4:00 pm), with self-guided Inuit games, a touch cart of specimens and Canada’s Arctic extended across the room in the form of an 8m by 11m map! Walk across this gym-sized floor map and discover loads of facts—with the help of cool specimens—about the plants, animals and minerals found in the North.
The Museum’s holiday programming officially runs from December 26 to January 4, but the fun begins earlier than that. A new 3D movie Titans of the Ice Age débuts in the Museum’s theatre on December 20. See mammoths, mastodons, sabre-toothed cats and giant sloths in brilliant 3D animation.
What’s more: Eight tiny reindeer are hiding in the exhibits as of December 20. Test your skill at being the best reindeer-spotting detective and see if you can find them all. (In fact, you can learn some neat facts about reindeer in the Museum’s Holiday Nature Scoop).
Be sure to visit the new exhibition, Arctic Voices, the mainstay of our holiday offerings. Discover how the Arctic is a fascinating, diverse and changing region. Enjoy the many interactive components, including quiz games where you compete against others, a throat-singing booth, a polar bear “den” crawl-through space, an Arctic hare jumping station, and more. On Sundays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the exhibition, learn how to mount Arctic plant specimens for the Museum’s National Herbarium. A $4 surcharge applies to Arctic Voices above general museum admission.
For a fun souvenir to take home, make your own Inuit snow goggles (igaak) while learning about the science of sunlight and snow. (Check at the reception desk for specific times).
All activities except Arctic Voices and the 3D movie are included with regular museum admission.
The Museum is located at 240 McLeod St. Follow the museum on Twitter (@museumofnature) or Facebook.
NOTE: The Museum closes at 2:00pm on December 24 and will be closed all day on December 25. The Museum will also be closed from January 5-9, 2015 for annual maintenance and cleaning.
