#GivingTuesday refers to the fourth Thursday in November. #GivingTuesday was started in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season (Black Friday and Cyber Monday).
"The desire to help is innate, at first, children like to help others because it helps them get what they want. Next, they do so because they get praise. Finally, they begin to anticipate the needs of others, and it becomes intrinsically rewarding to do nice things for people in their lives "says David Schonfeld, MD, director of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
The idea for #GivingTuesday was first announced in October 2012, seeing an opportunity to channel the generous spirit of the holiday season to inspire action around charitable giving, a group of friends and partners, led by 92nd Street Y, came together to find ways to promote and celebrate the great American tradition of giving. Leaders in philanthropy, social media and grassroots organizing joined with 92nd Street Y to explore what is working in modern philanthropy and how to expand these innovations throughout the philanthropic sector. Each week, new organizations joined the movement and provided creative ways people could embrace #GivingTuesday and collaborate in their giving efforts to create more meaningful results.
Today I challenge you to GIVE, to perform a simple act of kindness, no matter how small. Once you have completed the task please share and nomintate a friend to do so as well. Let's see how far we can pass this along. Remember "No act of kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted" -AESOP #motgogiftofkindness
